84-year-old finds her sales mojo from downsizing

The downsizer and downsizing details

Anna called me about downsizing from a 3-bedroom house to a 2-bedroom condo.

The condo: large with floor to ceiling windows.  Lots of space.

BUT...

There was hardly any cupboard & closet space.

I’m from Montreal, so don’t get me started on the lack of cupboard space in Toronto condos.

When Anna called me she was freaking out

Here are her top 3 anxiety sources:

1. Deciding what stays & what goes.

2. Hiring a mover and packer.

3. Getting some money for furniture.

Anna wasn’t keen on donating her furniture, and frankly I don't blame her.

Having never sold anything in her life, Anna was anxious that her pieces wouldn’t sell.

Long story short: we did the easiest things first

This wasn't exactly Anna's preferred strategy.

She wanted to do everything at once.

That's pretty normal when you're in a high anxiety state.

You want to tackle the big stuff first.

Understood, however, what we actually did was easy stuff first.

Declutter, then hire a mover & packers.

With that out of the way, there was much less to worry about.

There was less distraction, less multi-tasking and way better concentration on the task at hand.

Next long story short: the nice surprise

Our 80-something Anna, negotiated the sales herself!

I think she was disappointed when she had nothing left to sell.

How’s that for positive self-discovery?

The moral of this story: when there's a lot to do, do easy things first.

First, you accomplish something, which always feels good.

And your to-do list gets shorter.

Then, you can devote full creative energy to bigger challenges.

If Anna, in her 80’s, can tackle new challenges, so can you.
